Star Meats

Star MeatsWhile biking down to Star Meats for a lunch break during work, we couldn’t help but compare it to The Local Butcher Shop. Both sandwiches are made by a butcher shop, with Star Meats located in the back of a grocery store rather than a stand-alone building. Both tout ‘locally sourced’ and ‘sustainable’ meat, and both are located in somewhat ritzier neighborhoods (LBS in the Gourmet Ghetto, and Star Meats in Claremont). Star Meats, however, only makes their roast beef in-house, while LBS makes all their own stuff. On the other hand, Star Meats offers more than one sando a day, makes them fresh to order, and sells as many as get ordered until 2 pm. We were hopeful that they were also less of a let-down.

Our thoughts: After ordering, the first notable difference between LBS and Star Meats was the size. For the same price these sandwiches were about twice as big. After unwrapping and taking a bite, the second noticeable difference was that these were DELICIOUS. We had to try their roast beef and got the Michael Henry (roast beef, provolone, roasted peppers, arugula, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, black pepper, and mayo) as well as the Goodfella (genoa salami, hot coppa, fresh mozzarella, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and mayo). Both were served on a crusty, fresh baguette. Their roast beef was good enough to eat on a plate with a fork and knife, and super juicy. Add the smoky peppers, spicy arugula, and the tang of vinegar and it turned into a perfect sandwich. The Goodfella was equally as smart, with everything working well together (plus a spicy kick from the meat). I’m sure the mayo and olive oil add to the overall indulgent/juicy deliciousness. I guess that’s one benefit of making your sandwiches to order: you can actually put juicy mess into it (hint hint, Local Butcher Shop). It’s hard to find any faults, except that it could be closer! Everyone should try this place.
